Department of Microbiology

The department of Microbiology starting functioning in the year 1988. Since then the department has made remarkable progress and has grown in considerable ways. Ever since its inception, the department has been offering undergraduate programs in Microbiology. In 1998 a post graduate program was instituted. Both the programs are well designed keeping in mind the practical and theoretical skills required. Under each program, we offer a broad spectrum of courses that teach students how to question, analyze, understand and theorize. The courses are taught by professors with high credentials who are academic practitioners and engaged in research.

Our department provides a conducive environment for students to bring their ideas and research interests into reality. Through mentoring, continuous guidance in their research explorations, and by providing key external guidance like personality development, counseling, the department encourages each student to perform better. We also encourage them to participate in academic discussions and extracurricular activities. In addition to this, students are vested with the freedom to organize and engage in the department’s association activities, hence providing a platform to showcase their leadership qualities.

The associations of the department are Microcosm – managed by the undergraduate students and Microbiological Society – run by the students from the postgraduate section.

Faculty members have research projects from UGC and have published research articles both of National and international repute. Members of the faculty engage themselves in equipping the latest skills in their subject-specific domains of interests by attending workshops, seminars, and conferences. We have informal collaborations with academic and research institutes like Indian Institute of Science, GKVK, Nimhans, Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine, HCG cancer Hospital, and Maitems Analytics where our undergraduate students carry out their internships, summer fellowships, and M.Sc. dissertation work. Shortly we will be collaborating with Seattle University, Washington. Both the undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories are well equipped.

The department also offers two certificate courses: Principles of Genetic Engineering and Food technology.
