Postgraduate Programmes

Physics M.Sc.

Course Overview
The PG course in Physics was started in the year 2010. Our primary objective is to encourage and attract the undergraduate students who have a keen interest in physics into the field of research. The students are introduced to various important concepts of Classical Mechanics, Experimental Physics I and II, Mathematical Physics, Atomic and Molecular physics, Quantum Mechanics I and II, Numerical Techniques, Modern Optics, Statistical Physics, Electronics, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Astrophysics and Soft Condensed Matter Physics distributed over four semesters during the span of their course.

Ours is the only course in the country where thrust is given to Experimental Physics. Students are exposed to the various scientific instruments and techniques used in research. We have procured the experimental kits developed by Prof. R. Srinivasan, Indian Academy of Sciences in our laboratories. Ours is the only college in Karnataka where an elective course in Soft Condensed Matter Physics is offered.

College library equipped with a good collection of books and latest journals are accessible to students. The students are also provided with internet facility. Raman Research Institute (RRI), Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), and Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc) are extending their active support to the course. Students get an opportunity to access the research labs at Indian Academy of Sciences and other institutes and work under the guidance of professional scientists.

We engage the services of eminent scientists to conduct workshops and such exposures lead the students in getting project assignments under them. Regular talks by visiting scientists from various research institutions of the country are carried out under the aegis of Friday colloquium.

Pattern of Evaluation :
There is one Internal Assessment (30 Marks) and one end semester examination (50 Marks) for the theory papers. Apart from this the standard of students is constantly monitored and assessed by class tests, problem solving and assignments which constitutes 20 marks.

We conduct seminars, presentations and interactive sessions to help mould the students to achieve a high level of confidence, communicative skills and the ability to portray the concepts with clarity.
