Two new blocks inaugurated at SJC

St Joseph’s College marked a historical moment with the inauguration of two new blocks - Aruppe Block and Nelapathy Block - in the undergraduate and postgraduate campuses on saturday .


The blocks were blessed on the day SJC celebrated the Feast of St Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit Order. The new PG block extension honours late Fr. Joseph Chinnappa Nelapaty and it was inaugurated and blessed by Rev.Fr Stanislaus D’souza SJ, the Provincial of the Karnataka Jesuits.

Blessing the new block Fr.Stanislaus D’Souza said, “Lord, be close to your servants who ask for your blessing. Be with all the students who come here to gain knowledge and wisdom, be with the teaching and non-teaching staff who serve this institution, and be their protection in all their endeavours. Lord give them peace and joy of mind and body so that they radiate happiness and joy in the mission of imparting teaching and learning. We make this prayer in your holy name.”

Fr. Joseph Chinnappa Nelapaty, also fondly known as Nela, graduated from St. Joseph’s College and later served as SJC principal from 1980-89. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1953 at 17. It was during his time that SJC became the first affiliated college in Karnataka state to get PG Courses (Chemistry, Botany) in 1986.

The Aruppe Block was inaugurated and blessed by Fr. Clarence D’Souza Vice Principal and Registrar SJC. he said “ We have gathered here to implore God’s blessings on this Aruppe Block , a temple of learning and all who are involved in its use particularly the management , teachers , students and support staff. We pray that all involved in the work of this block management, staff, support staff, parents and guardians may work together in building love and better community where every person is valued, respected by their presence here.’’

The other dignitaries present for the blessing ceremony included Fr. Antony Joseph, Vice President of BJES, Fr. Leo Pereira, SJ ,Secretary of the Karnatka Jesuit Educational Society, Fr. Brian Periera, Rector, SJC, and .Fr. Victor Lobo, SJ Principal of SJC. The occasion concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Clement D’Souza, Vice Principal of the Aruppe Block. “The new extension of this block was a dream of many Jesuits, the dream is today translated into reality.”
