India needs qualitative research

“India has all the potential and possibility of becoming a great world leader in science,” said Bharat Ratna, Dr Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao, better known as Prof. CNR Rao. He has been honored with the country’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna in 2013 addressed the students at St. Joseph’s College, Bengaluru on January 11.

“While India is doing well in scientific research, others are doing better and more. India needs to produce more qualitative scientists to emerge as a world leader,” said, Dr. CNR Rao, a giant figure in Indian sciences. Inviting the aspiring scientists to take up serious work in research he called upon to pursue their dreams with passion, hard work and dedication. “Never stop learning. Be enthusiastic like a child. The thirst to gain more knowledge should never come to an end. Always gain fresh insights, don't hesitate to ask the right questions. Dare to dream, dream the impossible and thirst for qualitative than to be trivial,” he added.

The 82 year-old scientist, who is known for his work in solid state and structural chemistry recalling the role his teachers played in his life, “Being a good professor means being a good person and being generous. Whatever I am today is due to the generosity of my teachers.”

Expressing his concern over the mediocracy that is prevalent in every field Prof. Rao invited not be content with the trivial.

Expressing his dissatisfaction over the funds allocated for scientific research Prof. Rao who has honorary doctorates from 70 universities said, “Less than 1 percent of GDP has been allocated to research.” Citing the example of renowned musician Bismillah khan, who once told that till he is alive on this earth he wants to be in the world of music, “Till i am in this world, Iwant to be in the world of science.” said Professor C.N Rao. Fr. Victor Lobo, the Principal, Fr. Brain Pereira, the Rector, Fr. Richard Rego, Director of Research Center, Ronald J. Mascarenhas, Coordinator, Chemical Society were present.
