"APPLICATION OF MACHINE LEARNING ON LARGE DATASETS" : Organised By The department of Big Data Analytics

The department of Big Data Analytics of St. Joseph’s College conducted a one day workshop on 1 March, 2018 on "Application of Machine Learning on Large Datasets". There was a participation of 80 members(students, faculty and research scholars) with 56 of them being from other colleges (10 different colleges).The objective was to propel young minds in the field of Artificial intelligence(AI) and Machine Learning by providing them with a brief idea about the field ,delivered by eminent scholars , and a hands-on session on building machine learning models using large datasets(Big Data) as well.


On the day, registrations began at 8:30am and the inaugural ceremony commenced at 9:30 am with a prayer song followed by the lighting of the lamp.

The Presidential speech was delivered by the Principal Rev. Fr. Dr. Victor Lobo SJ. The honorable speakers for the day included Dr. Bimal Kumar Roy , Head of R C BoseCentre for Cryptology and Security, IndianStatistical Institute, Kolkata, Dr. IndrajitMandal,TCS and Dr. SrinivasBhogle, former Director of TEOCO Software Pvt. Ltd (TSPL) (over 8 years). Fr. Dr. Richard Rego SJ introduced Dr. Bimal Kumar Roy. Following the felicitation of the guests,the main sessions began.

The initial session by Dr. Bimal Roy gave a brief idea on machine learning , what kind of data is used in it and how, major applications of it as well. The following session was on personality development and behavioral aspects one ought to have while working in the field of analytics and information technology in general, by Dr. SrinivasBhogle. The next two sessions were a brief introduction to machine learning by Professor Krishna Mouli(St Joseph's college) and a hands on session that uses machine learning algorithms by Ms. Srividya Sharma (student, BDA department of St Joseph's college(Autonomous) Bangalore). The afternoon session was a hands-on session by Dr. IndrajitMandal

The workshop could successfully provide the students with a good opportunity and an exposure to dig a little into what Machine learning is all about.
