Fighter for justice and rights

Dr. Fr. Ambrose Pinto has always stood for the rights of Dalits and downtrodden. His death is a great loss not only for the Jesuits but also the country. He was an academic activist and was associated with civil society movements.

Fr. Pinto, was a consultant to Karnataka Government; expert committee member for the identification of the backward classes in Karnataka, appointed in 2015. He was a member of the Jesuit Core Team that studied about the current issues of the country. He was also a member of the improvement of Government Schools in Karnataka, appointed in 2016. During his term as a principal in the year 2003-2009 at St. Joseph’s College, Bengaluru, he was instrumental in bringing Dalai Lama, Somnath Chatterjee, former Speaker of Lok Sabha G.K. Pillai, the former Home Secretary, Sachin Pilot a Politician and member of the Indian National Congress.

Kiran Jeevan, PRO of SJC said, “He always spoke about the marginalised people and how important it is to help them and never let them down.” “He was an educationist and an academician from a political background. He would go for any rally or march in support of Human Rights for Dalits, tribes and women.” said, Fr. Dr. Richard Rego, Director of the Research Centre. “He believed in having direct contact with the community.” he added.
