NAAC team begins assessment of SJCs

A three-member National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) peer team consisting of Dr. P. Prakash, Vice-chancellor of SRM University, Dr. Mrs. Dhulasi Vardharajan, from the School of Economics, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, and Prof. M D P Rao, former principal, Khalikote Autonomous College, Odisha, began their audit and assessment of St Joseph’s College on Friday.

The team was welcomed to SJC on Friday morning with a guard of honour by students of the army and air wing of the NCC in the UG block in the presence of the Principal Dr. Fr. Victor Lobo, Rector Fr Brian Pereira, Vice-principal of the PG Block Fr Dr Melwyn D’Cunha, Director of the Research Centre, Fr Dr Richard Rego, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) Convener Dr Subhashini Muthukrishnan, Dr Syed Wajeed, head of the Microbiology Department and others involved in making preparations for the NAAC visit.

The peer team was then escorted to the Principal’s office and thereafter to the De Nobili Hall in the auditorium block for a closed-room presentation by the Principal and Dr. Subhashini on IQAC. The peer team was then led to different departments in the UG block where they examined presentations made by each department, documents, models, etc.

For instance, the Chemistry Department presented the achievements of students across the years, minor and major research projects, innovations and best practices, a brief of its 23 faculty members, extension activities, conferences, workshops and seminars. A lack cited was the lack of a department library which was present a few years ago, but lack of proper management led to its eradication. The department’s future plans include industrial collaborations and use of green methods for experiments, etc.

The 15-year-old Department of Biotechnology presented curricular aspects which included the syllabus, research, student achievements and open source textbooks. The NAAC peer team is spending the whole day visiting the under graduate degree block. The Post Graduate block would be visited and assessed by the peer team on Saturday.
