SJC skywalk project gets underway

Over 6,000 students and staff are expected to benefit from the skywalk to be constructed to link the UG and PG campuses of SJC. The ground-breaking ceremony marking the beginning of the construction of the skywalk was presided over by MLA, Shanti Nagar Constituency, N.A Harris. Principal, Fr. Victor Lobo and many other officials from the BBMP, including Srinivas, Executive Engineer, were present at the event.

A dream project of the college finally became a reality on Friday, after plan sanction approvals at multiple stages from the BBMP and related officials. Prof. Regina Mathias, Physical Sciences Department, recalled the efforts taken to get the project sanctioned at different stages. “The BBMP officials, engineers and the local corporators were of great support in this effort,” she said.

N.A. Harris also criticised the bureaucracy for putting stumbling blocks in this effort. “I have been in favour of this project since 2008. Despite the project being sanctioned twice, the bureaucratic system in place delayed the effort. The next generation must work towards changing this system,” he said.

The ceremony was blessed and inaugurated by Vice- Principals, Fr. Melwyn D’Cunha and Fr. Clement. The project was taken up by Ad Age Outdoor Pvt. Ltd, a city-based ad agency. “In the years 2016 and 2017, two viable models of the projects were proposed and the BBMP also suggested a company to take it up, which brought Ad Age Pvt Ltd into the picture,” said Prof. Regina.

The skywalk construction will begin within six months, and aims to solve issues of traffic and safety during peak traffic hours. “This initiative was the idea of Late. Rev. Fr. Ambrose Pinto, and indeed an important milestone for the staff and students at SJC,” said Fr. Victor Lobo.
