SJC celebrates 136th Sports Day with verve

The annual sports day for all the St Joseph’s Colleges (Autonomous) was held at St Joseph’s Indian High School on February 8. The final day events was a culmination of meets from previous days when the qualifiers and pre-qualifiers took place. The events on Friday were mostly athletics that included the 100 to 1,500-metre races, tug of war and relay races.

Chief Guest MV Prasad Babu, an ex international Kabaddi player for Team India, was welcomed by the Rector Fr Melwyn D’Cunha, Principal Fr Victor Lobo and several other distinguished guests from the college. The day saw a competition between each department, irrespective of their division or year, all competing to secure the scores needed for the overall championship.

“It was a tight match. The third BCom C and D sections were tied at the first position until the tug of war that took place at the end. That became the tipping point for the teams,” said Raisa D’Souza from the Department of Mathematics, who was in charge of the documentation team for the day. It was BCom Section C that finally won the overall championship at the UG level. The first-year Big Data Analytics class had a massive victory at the PG level.

“The PG Big Data team was leading from the start,” said Dsouza. The PG team won with by more than 30 points. The closing ceremony saw the individual male and female champions from both the UG and PG level awarded.

The college flag was lowered at the end of the ceremony by the sports representative and the Physical Education Department members and handed to the principal.
