College exceeds UGC’s expectation for grant

The University Grants Commission (UGC) team inspecting Colleges with Potential for Excellence (CPEs) visited St Joseph’s College (Autonomous) on Monday, December 17, and was reportedly impressed enough by the manner in which the first tranche of the commission’s grants were spent to promise a significant rise in the second phase, which is expected to be released soon.

The team inspected the college laboratories in order to make sure that funds granted by the UGC were being utilised efficiently. The visit began with a presentation at the college boardroom by Michael Rajkumar, who heads the college’s CPE and College of Excellence (CE) Committee. The last visit by the UGC’s CE team was in 2014, which resulted in the college being granted approximately Rs 1.2 crore towards development.

The CPE team inspected the instrumentation department and the library where a majority of the fund granted was allotted. Dr Syed Wajeed, the director of the college’s Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), said the CPE team was particularly impressed by the solar panel installation. “The positive outcome of this visit gives the college hope for the second phase of the CE,” he said.
