School of Life Science

Department of Microbiology

The inception of the Department of Microbiology was in the year 1988. Since then the department has made remarkable progress and has grown in considerable ways. Since its inception, the department has been offering three year undergraduate programme in Microbiology with Chemistry and Zoology combination (MCZ) and Microbiology with Chemistry and Botany (MCB). In 1998, a post graduate programme was instituted. Both the programmes are well designed keeping in mind the practical, theoretical and research skills required. Under each program, we offer a broad spectrum of courses that enable students to critically think, apply, analyze, evaluate and create. The courses are taught by professors with high credentials who are academic practitioners and are engaged in research.

The Department intends to inculcate in the students an interest to explore the world of Microbiology and contribute to the rapidly expanding field. We wish to offer the society, a generation of humble yet aspiring young minds eagerly striving towards unraveling the mystery of Science.

The Department of Microbiology aims at identifying one’s potential to become a centre for augmenting and contributing continuously to the vibrant field of Microbiology. We strive to create and provide an ambient learning atmosphere and prepare students for academia, industry and productive application of this knowledge in everyday life. It emphasizes the impact of microbes on environment and the human activities.

Department provides a conducive environment for students to exhibit their innovative ideas, required exposure to research institutes and industries. The department strives to enhance exposure to high end laboratory facilities and pioneers in current research in the field of life sciences to cultivate an ambient research culture among its students. Faculty from the department mentor students continuously for their research explorations and career guidance. The department encourages students to perform better by participating in academic discussions and extracurricular activities. In addition to this, students are vested with the freedom to organize and engage in the department’s association activities, hence providing a platform to showcase their leadership qualities.

The associations of the department are Microcosm – managed by the undergraduate students and Microbiological Society run by the students from the postgraduate section.

Faculty members have research projects from UGC and have published research articles in journals of national and international repute. M.Sc. Microbiology students have also published their dissertation work carried out in various reputed research institutes like IISc., NCBS etc., Members of the faculty engage themselves in equipping the latest skills in their subject-specific domains of interests by attending Faculty development programmes, Workshops, Seminars, and Conferences. We have informal collaborations with academic and research institutes like Indian Institute of Science, NCBS, JNCSAR, CCMB, GKVK, Nimhans, St. Johns Research Centre, Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine, HCG cancer Hospital, and Maitems Analytics where our undergraduate students carry out their internships, summer fellowships, and masters students carry out their dissertation in the 4th semester. We have also collaborated with Seattle University, USA. Both the undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories are well equipped. Department has received grants from Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India , Vision Group of Science and Technology (VGST), Govt. of Karnataka and Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India.

Programme specific outcomes
B.Sc. in Microbiology has been designed to educate students in various important disciplines of Microbiology. Students will develop the skills and competencies required for application of Microbiological concepts, basic research findings and to work in Microbiology based industries or to become an Entrepreneur.

M.Sc. in Microbiology has been designed to get an in-depth knowledge of basic and applied aspect of Microbiology. Students will develop advanced skills and competencies to understand mechanisms in Microorganisms. Students will be able to retrieve biological data, analyse, evaluate and then to formulate research ideas. They will acquire skills specific to applied microbiology and convert the information to knowledge through hypothesis, design, execution and interpretation. Students will have enhanced problem solving abilities and also an expanded career option in research and development, industries, teaching or in entrepreneurial ventures.
