Principal's Message

Welcome to St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Bengaluru.

At St. Joseph’s, we try to create leaders for a better world. Leaders, deeply rooted in our philosophy “Fide et Labore” (a Latin phrase that means ‘Faith and Toil’), who commit themselves to excel in the fields they choose. That excellence is driven by the values and principles of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order that governs St. Joseph’s. We make every effort to be relevant, innovative, and creative. We believe that the education imparted at St. Joseph’s prepares our students for a highly competitive world. Yet, in all these endeavours, we haven’t lost sight of the marginalised and the less fortunate of our society. We have made every effort to sensitise our students to the challenges faced by people in need. During the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath, Josephites were at the forefront of relief and rehabilitation work joining hands with the civil officials. Our outreach program ‘Bembala’ stood in support of the suffering.
The Jesuit motto “educating men and women for others” animates our vision to reach out to those most in need. As we now brace ourselves to face the post-COVID challenges, I wish to encourage each of us to support one another and to ensure that St. Joseph’s continues to be a place of deep care for each person, especially for those who feel most vulnerable. I invite you to join us in this venture. Read More

PATRON OF THE COLLEGE - ST. JOSEPH WITH CHILD JESUS

The Patron of our College and the model for our students is Saint Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, the man entrusted to raise the Son of God.

Joseph was born in 100 BC in the city of Bethlehem. He was a carpenter, a skilled craftsman and a man of strong conviction who lived out his beliefs in his actions. True to his life, Joseph was described in the Bible as a righteous man. Even in the face of severe humiliation Joseph responded to God in obedience and he practiced self-control. Even when personally wronged, he had the quality of being sensitive to someone else's shame, which we understand from his actions toward Mary when she was found to be pregnant before marriage. Joseph willingly obeyed the command of God to take Mary as his wife, in spite of the public humiliation he would face. Perhaps this noble quality made him God's choice to be our Messiah's earthly father.

Joseph is a wonderful biblical example of integrity, righteousness and godly character. As he toiled for his livelihood, the motto of the College, "Fide et Labore", which means faith and toil, reflects the life and spirit of St. Joseph, a carpenter by profession and the protector of the Holy Family. St. Joseph’s life reveals to us that walking in obedience to God may result in humiliation and disgrace before men but when we obey God, even in the face of adversity and public shame, he leads and guides us. Our beloved patron St. Joseph is also the patron saint of the Universal Church, families, fathers, expectant mothers, travellers, immigrants, craftsmen, working people among many others. We look up to St. Joseph to help us offer love and mercy even when we’re wronged and to protect, guide and inspire us into a life of hard work, toil and faith.

What is Ignatian Year?

St Josephs College is a private Institution run by the Jesuits of Karnataka. From 20 May 2021 to 31 July 2022, the Jesuits and the entire Ignatian family are celebrating an Ignatian Year. This year marks the 500th anniversary of the wounding of their founder, Ignatius of Loyola at a battle in Pamplona in 1521. That event changed the course of his life; it led to the foundation of the Society of Jesus which in turn provoked dramatic changes in the Church and in the history of Catholicism.

20th May 1521 - the day when St Ignatius was hit by a cannon ball

31st July 1556 - the day when St Ignatius died
