Natural Science Association (NSA)

Vision:
Natural Science Association was established in the year 1957. It was the brain child of Zoology Department of St.Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Bangalore. This Association is one of the oldest and has been active from the past 63 years. It was with an aim of providing a platform for Co-Curricular activities that NSA was established.
Mission:
‘Education consists of not only academics but also consists of Co-Curricular and Extra –Curricular activities’. Natural Science association has imparted knowledge to many batches of students which is the largest in the country and still strives to reach out to each and every student on campus and outside the campus providing an opportunity to them to learn new things. NSA continues to do their best in successfully organizing all kind of activities.
Objectives:
Student oriented initiatives of inculcating information and knowledge on the world of animals. Natural Science Associations conducts Zoo talks, workshops on various aspects, Webinars, seminars, outdoor activities like Birding, field visits, Nature walks, Volunteering programs etc. Providing a platform to share views, thoughts and work experiences and helping other fellow students.

The Natural Science Association, Department of Zoology, SJC had conducted a seminar on the topic Moth Diversity, Ecology and Conservation. The webinar held at theinter national level, was conducted on Microsoft teams and was streamed live on YouTube live and Instagram live. The webinar was led by two speakers proficient in their respective field of study.
Dr. Subhalaxmi, also called the ‘Moth Lady of India’ spoke about “Denizens of the Dark Dynasty”- Moths- Jewels of the Night. Mr. Nitin gave us an insight on the topic- Moth Ecology and Evolution.
The technical glitch in the webinar provided an opportunity for noted entomologist Dr. Abraham Verghese whp highlighted the ecological roles of moths. This encouraged participants to ask questions moderated by students of the association. The student volunteers along with convenor Dr. M Jayashankar organized the webinar professionally and flawlessly.
The speakers encouraged the participants to engage in findings and contribute the records for further research purposes. After successfully overcoming the technical glitches and elaborate Q&A session extended till 8:15 p.m. The session was moderated by Dr. John Paul and a final vote of thanks was given by Dr. Kavya Krishnapa.
The student volunteers along with convenor Dr. M Jayashankar organized the webinar professionally and flawlessly.

The Natural Science Association, Department of Zoology, SJC had conducted a seminar on the topic Perspective of Tiger Conservation. The webinar held at the national level, was conducted on Microsoft teams and was streamed live on YouTube live and Instagram live. The webinar was led by four speakers proficient in their respective field of study. Mr. Harsha spoke on the topic-‘Photographing Stripes’. This helped the participants understand about the behavioral patterns of the tiger.
Mr. Avinash enlightened the viewers on the topic-‘ the lone star of the Deccan: a prelude to conserving tigers in a fragile ecosystem’. He put forth points on conserving tigers and Research information on the same which gave the participants immense knowledge.
Ms. Bhavna spoke on the topic-‘Communities in Conservation. She elucidated on her experience on working for wildlife conservation and above the communities in the conservation and the various activities which they conduct.
Dr. Wasim spoke on the topic, ‘the role of veterinarians in wildlife conservation’. He gave us an insight on the role of veterinarians with reference to tiger is cues and rehabilitation.
The session was open to discussion with the following questions from the enthusiastic participants. The questions were asked to the speakers pertaining to their particular topics. The session was extended upto 7 p.m. with the number of questions being asked by the active participants. The final vote of thanks was given by Rebecca.
